This media art installation created a comfortable, indoor oasis of calm in the heart of the city during mid-winter in Melbourne. The installation used real-time weather data to drive a virtual landscape based on sights and sounds in the natural environment inspired by places and ecologies from around Victoria, Australia.
I conducted an ethnography during the 13 days of the installation, in which more than 80 adults participated in semi-structured interviews. I also observed the different ways in which some 1,100 visitors occupied and inhabited the space.
The installation was supported by the Public Programs at State Library, Victoria and was presented in partnership with the School of Media and Communication, RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia.
